Many people study English for years only to discover that the first time they arrive in the U.K. they can’t understand anybody. This session will be about the ‘real’ English people actually speak and will touch on subjects which don’t usually appear in textbooks. We will move on to look at the growth of ‘management speak’ in business and how English creates new words. Finishing with examples of British humour expressed through language.

Rod came to English teaching via linguistics (he holds a Masters degree in Linguistics from Goldsmith’s University in London) and so occasionally has a different view on language matters to those who came to the profession via English language or Modern Languages qualifications. He has been teaching English to adult foreign nationals for nearly 20 years and specialises in those who are intermediate or above and particularly enjoys exploring the cultural side of learning a language.
